The guide taps a hole in the wall, out crawls a tarantula the size of a dinner plate.
This becomes a theme as we bounce across Costa Rica: dazzling creatures in every nook and cranny, completely disguised to us mere mortals. Always hire the guide!
We've been in Costa Rica a few days; today we're on a nature walk in Santa Elena. In a few hours we'll be zip-lining hundreds of feet above the forest canopy. But for now we snake through a dense old-growth rainforest while our guide points out insects, plants, and even a few sloths we wouldn't have noticed in a thousand years without his keen eye.
