I’m a UX / Product Designer passionate about improving cities, transit, and public services. My capabilities span the full range of UX and UI processes from user research to visual design. I started my career in architecture, where I learned to identify user needs, and to explore and test solutions to meet them.

Gibney Wayfinding

Following our rebrand and web redesign, Gibney approached us with an idea for their expanding campus at 280 Broadway in Lower Manhattan. With the acquisition of an additional wing, their space was set to nearly double, and would need additional signage to help users navigate. Gibney engaged us to do a comprehensive analysis and design new orientational, directional, identification, and regulatory wayfinding signage—which would also extend their refreshed brand into physical space. I guided all phases of design, including Schematic Design, Design Development, and Construction Documents. As of this writing, fabrication is underway. Full case study forthcoming.

Gehl Institute

Fresh off our collaboration on the Gehl Public Life Tools platform, Gehl Institute engaged Objective Subject to redesign the rest of their website. Taking cues from the Tools page’s airy but structured layout, we redesigned the homepage to give a fuller overview of Gehl’s programming and mission, along with refreshes of other core pages and site navigation. I guided Information Architecture, User Experience Design / Wireframing, and Visual Design. The site refresh is currently in development.

Bus Turnaround Campaign

Led by the Bus Turnaround Coalition—a group of four New York-based transit advocacy organizations—the Bus Turnaround Campaign is an effort to fix the city’s unreliable bus service by mobilizing New Yorkers to pressure elected officials to enact a list of policy demands. The Coalition engaged Objective Subject to design a responsive website to be the public face of the campaign. I guided all phases of design, including Information Architecture, User Experience, Interaction Design, and Visual Design.

Gibney Dance

Gibney Dance is a New York City-based dance and arts organization. Gibney engaged Objective Subject to refresh their brand, followed by a clean-slate redesign of their web platform. For this latter project, I collaborated with the OS team on User Research, and guided UX Design and UI Design (Interaction + Visual).

Henry.tax

Henry.tax is a project of a New York City-based accounting firm that approached Objective Subject with an idea: pair tax prep customers with CPAs via a digital portal. The client engaged Objective Subject to design the responsive website that would facilitate this interaction. I guided the User Research, Information Architecture, and UX Design phases of the project, and partnered with another designer for UI.

NationSwell

NationSwell is a media company that champions solutions to America’s problems and supports people making them happen. They tell American stories—curated into major categories, like education, environmental sustainability, national service, and the economy—and mobilize changemakers by convening summits around the country. NationSwell engaged Objective Subject to reimagine and redesign their digital platform. I guided the Information Architecture and User Experience / Wireframing phases of design, and helped with Visual Design.

Gehl Public Life Tools

Gehl Institute is a non-profit dedicating to transforming the way cities are shaped by making public life an intentional driver for design, policy, and governance. Gehl Institute engaged Objective Subject to design a responsive web platform to disseminate a suite of open-source tools developed to measure activities in public spaces around the world. I guided the UX Design and UI Design phases of the project, and contributed to User Research / Strategy.

Bennett Midland

Bennett Midland is a management consulting firm that works exclusively in the civic sector, examining every aspect of their clients’ missions and operations to design solutions that make a difference for the people they serve. Bennett Midland engaged Objective Subject to redesign their website. I guided the Information Architecture and User Experience Design / Wireframes phases of the project, and contributed to Strategy and Visual Design.

All Transportation Is Local

All Transportation is Local is a multi-volume publication researched and written by TransitCenter about the tools mayors and other local officials have at their disposal to support investments in transit, which historically have been seen solely as the purview of state and federal governments. TransitCenter approached Objective Subject to design a responsive website (and print) version of the publication (discuss expanded scope below). I guided UX, Interaction, and Visual Design—including working closely with an illustrator—and contributed to Research and Strategy.

Claremont Colleges Library

Claremont Colleges Library is the shared library for the consortium of seven institutions that comprise Claremont Colleges in Claremont, California. CCL engaged Objective Subject to redesign and bring clarity to their web platform, which over the years had become a chaotic mess of poorly-integrated third-party vendors. I guided all phases of design, including a lengthy research / Information Architecture phase, User Experience Design, and Visual Design.

Hester Street

Hester Street is an urban planning, design and development nonprofit that works to ensure neighborhoods are shaped by the people who live in them. They offer planning, design and community development technical assistance to community-based organizations, government and other agencies. Hester Street engaged Objective Subject for a comprehensive rebrand and redesign of their web platform. I guided the User Experience Design phase of the project and contributed heavily to Visual Design.

TransitCenter

TransitCenter are a foundation that supports advocacy, research and leadership development for transit reform across the U.S. TransitCenter engaged Objective Subject for a refresh of their rebrand, followed by a full redesign of their digital platform. I guided all phases of design, including Information Architecture, User Experience, Interaction Design, and Visual Design.

CBS News for Apple TV

Following Apple’s major refresh of the Apple TV operating system and hardware, our CBS Interactive team embarked on a major effort to bring a brand new CBS News app to Apple TV. I guided User Experience and Interaction Design for the project, and was heavily involved in shaping Information Architecture and Visual Design.

CBSN

CBSN was a multi-quarter project at CBS Interactive to bring CBSN—CBS News’ streaming news service—to iPhone, iPad, Android phone and tablet, and responsive web. The product comprises both a 24/7 live news feed and video-on-demand clips curated from the stream. I guided the User Experience, Interaction Design, and Visual Design phases of the project, and worked closely with developers during implementation.

CBS News App

CBS News App was a multi-quarter project at CBS Interactive to bring CBS News to iPhone, iPad, and Android phone and tablet. The project comprised the CBS News vertical, with articles, photo galleries, and video, as well as all six CBS news programs: 60 Minutes, CBS Evening News, CBS This Morning, Face The Nation, Sunday Morning, and 48 Hours. For a later update we adapted our responsive web design for CBSN (24/7 streaming news network) for the app. I guided the User Experience phases of the project and contributed heavily to Information Architecture and Visual Design, and worked closely with developers during implementation.

60 Minutes App

60 Minutes App was a multi-quarter project at CBS Interactive to bring 60 Minutes to iPhone, iPad, and Android phone and tablet. The app heavily featured video, with special focus on the three 20-minute segments from the most recent episode. It also included a deep, searchable archive of all show content since its debut in the 1960s. I guided the User Experience phases of the project and contributed heavily to Information Architecture and Visual Design, and worked closely with developers during implementation.

Tamil Women’s House

Tamil Women’s House is a self-initiated project by myself and friend Lauren Farquhar to design and build a small retreat and health facility for women in rural Tamil Nadu, India. We raised over $14,000 for the project, including a grant from Architecture for Humanity. Land was donated by a local non-profit. We lived in India for four months during design and construction. Lauren and I jointly guided design and coordinated construction.
